Parenting Forum

I'm stepping away from the weight loss and exercise for a moment to ask some parental questions, and I hope all 2 of my readers give their best answers!

1. As a parent, what's your form of punishment? Does it fit the crime, or is it straight across the board the same each time?

1.5. If you are a "fit the crime" parent, how do you punish lying? How do you punish being disobedient?

2. Are your children allowed snacks? If so, do they or are they required to eat their dinner?

3. What are your guidelines on dinner? Do you make your children finish what's on their plate, or let them live by "when they are full"? Is it right to make your children over-eat to prove a point?

4. How much friend time do you allow your children? (Obviously this doesn't include siblings)

5. When your kids are at home(and not at meal time or family time), do you provide entertainment for them, or are they required to entertain themselves?

I'm doing a reevaluation of my/our parenting, and wondering what other parents do. If only I could be a fly on the wall in your home for a day...

Okay, reading these questions made me realize that I'm an unfit mother. You'll see why when you read my answers.

#1) Pretty much straight across the board.

#2) Yes I usually get them snacks whenever they want them. Sometimes they get them themselves and I have no say in it. I come out of the bathroom to find that Lacy has poured a bowl of yogurt for herself and her brother. And they do eat dinner. Usually they eat most of it.

#3) I let them eat until they tell me they are done. When Lacy tells me she's done, I try to get her to eat a few more bites and she does. Trent eats until he's full and then hands me his plate.

#4) I don't even know. We mostly just play with cousins whenever we feel like it.

#5) They mostly entertain themselves, but sometimes they'll cook with me or we'll read together or chase each other. I think we have a pretty good balance of both. But I've never even thought about it until now.

I need to be better about a lot of these things!!
